Senior guard Drew Jacobs scored 21 points and Alex Jacobs added 17 to lift Mendham to a 54-44 triumph over Rahway in a North 2, Group III state semifinal contest on Friday.
Nick Maguire added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Minutemen. An 18-7 third-quarter effort helped Mendham build a 42-27 advantage going into the final period. Hakeem Kornegay scored 15 points for top-seeded Rahway.
The victory provides fourth-seeded Mendham with a rematch against defending champion Plainfield. Second-seeded Plainfield defeated Newark East Side 71-57. Last season Plainfield topped Mendham 87-81 in double overtime to capture the state sectional title. Tore Vicarisi put on a display with 41 points in the title game that was played at Mendham. This time the Minutemen will travel to Plainfield for a 7 p.m. game on Monday night.
There are three Morris County teams left in state tournament play. Two of them will be in action on Saturday. In North 1, Group II Mountain Lakes travels to play Lodi in a 1 p.m. contest at Lodi High School. In Non-Public B Morristown-Beard will host Hudson Catholic in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
