Mountain Lakes triumphs; Morris Knolls, Montville win titles

PEQUANNOCK — Paul Tarnawski scored 21 points to lift Mountain Lakes to a 55-41 triumph over Pequannock in the Blue and Gold Tournament consolation game on Saturday.

Chris Herring added eight points for the Lakers which improve to 2-2 on the season.Kurt Weinmann added 15 points and Mike Leva added seven points for the Golden Panthers (2-4).

Mountain Lakes built a nine-point lead midway through the period and withstood a Pequannock run near the end of the third quarter.  The Lakers put the game away with a 10-3 fourth-quarter effort.

Friday’s Tournament results

Morris Knolls Tournament

Morris Knolls 49, Jefferson 45 – The Golden Eagles captured the Morris Knolls Holiday Tournament title. Carroll Rich scored 16 points and Brian O’Neill and Mike Signer added 10 points each for the Golden Eagles (4-2). The Falcons suffered their first lost despite J.R. Reese’s 11 points. Bryan Langan also had 10 for Jefferson (4-1).

Hopatcong Classic

Roxbury 69, Voorhees 36 – The Gaels earned their first win of the season. Senior guard Ryan Kelley scored 28 points and Malcolm Chavis added 10 for Roxbury. The Gaels pulled ahead with a 28-8 third quarter run.

Butler Classic

Montville 72, Parsippany 31 – The Mustangs built a 24-8 first-quarter run and gradually pulled away in the title game. Jacob Kaplan’s 16-point performance was one of four double-digit scorers for Montville (2-3). Leonard Lee scored 16 points for Parsippany (2-3).

Butler 47, Pompton Lakes 43 – The Bulldogs gave first year coach Brandon Mefford his initial varsity victory in the consolation contest. Billy White and Nick Delittiboudere scored 14 points apiece for the Bulldogs (1-4).

Chatham Classic

Hanover Park 38, Millburn 37 – Matt Geisser scored 11 points and Matt Williams had eight points and four rebounds for the Hornets (3-1). Hanover Park’s 11-2 third-quarter run gave it a 28-21 advantage going into the final period.

J. P. Flynn Tournament

Sparta 63. Mendham 56 – Senior point guard Zach Frick scored 20 points and Mitch Cohen added 16 for the unbeaten Spartans (5-0) in the semifinal contest. Alex Jacobs scored 17 points and Bobby Stolz added 13 for Mendham (4-1).

West Morris 72, West Milford 57 – Pat Barron scored 17 points and his brother Conor Barron added 15 for the Highlanders (3-1) in consolation play.

Summit Classic

Summit 67, Morristown 64 – The Colonials fell in the title game after four overtimes. Morristown drops to 4-1 on the season. Ba’Shawn Mickens scored 28 points for the Hilltoppers (5-0) in the title game.

Rangers Holiday Tournament

Kinnelon 65, Wallkill Valley 51 – The Colts took control with a 19-5 first -uarter spree. Sam Robbins scored 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished eight assists for Kinnelon (3-2) in the consolation contest. Seniors Evan Argiriou and RJ Giannetti added 15 points each for the Colts. R. J. Giannetti grabbed 15 rebounds.
