Chatham vaults to the top of the rankings

Morriscountyvarsityboysbasketball Top 10 for January 7

  1. Chatham (6-2) – Victories against Delbarton and Mount Olive place the Cougars at the top spot this week. They jump up from No. 4 in the ranking.
  2. Mount Olive (5-2) – The Marauders stay put due to a 71-61 loss to Chatham. Zach Heeman put in one of the better offensive performances so far with a 32-point, 12-rebound effort in a win against Morris Knolls.
  3. Mendham (5-2) – The Minutemen lost to Randolph last week but practically everyone in the rest of the top 10 suffered losses and the Rams gym is one of the toughest in the area when it comes to perimeter shooting.
  4. Morristown (5-2) – The Colonials drop because of a 52-48 home loss to Morristown-Beard. The Crimson prevailed by knocking down 11 threes.
  5. West Morris (5-2) – The Highlanders stay put because of a 49-47 loss to Morristown. West Morris squandered a 14-point lead and lost in the final seconds on Sean Hoehn’s putback.
  6. Delbarton (4-3) – The Green Wave split this week with a loss to Chatham. Ryan Curran and Rob Thoma have become a dynamic duo.
  7. Hanover Park (5-3) – The Hornets should have debuted at No. 7 last week due to beating Whippany Park in their opener. They beat Dover and lost a nailbiter to Nutley.
  8. Whippany Park (4-2) – The Wildcats earned a victory against Morristown-Beard this week.
  9. Morris Knolls (4-3) – The Golden Eagles lost to Mount Olive 86-74 recently but still merit their top 10 ranking.
  10. Jefferson (4-2) – The Falcons are in a two-game slump. Their most recent defeat was a double overtime loss to Hackettstown.

Knocking on the door:

Give Morristown-Beard some credit. The Crimson (3-5) are scrambling for victories. They are doing it with the 3-point shooting skills of Stephen Sangree, Justin Stiles and many others. They make close to five treys  a game. When they are hot, like they were against Morristown, they can give problems to most teams. It should also be noted that Kinnelon (4-2) has a winning mark. The Colts registered victories against Morris Catholic, Madison, Wallkill Valley and Boonton.
