Morris County teams eliminated from tournament

Saturday was slaughterday for Morris County teams as Mount Olive, Chatham and Morristown were eliminated in NJSIAA state tournament sectional semifinal action.

Mount Olive got the closest taking Sparta to overtime before losing 73-67 in North 1, Group III action on Saturday.

Rashaan Spencer scored 26 points including five 3-pointers, Ryan Traub added 17 points and Zach Heeman had nine points and 11 rebounds. Sparta was led by Zach Frick’s 34-point performances.

Irvington 57, Chatham 43 – Turnovers and second chance scoring opportunities doomed the Cougars which never led in the North 2, Group III contest. Joe Timmes scored 10 points and Luke Conrad and Sam Carson had eight points apiece for the Cougars (22-6).

Newark East Side 59, Morristown 30 – Sean Hoehn scored 14 points and Ryan Brunnock added seven for the Colonials in a terrific comeback season. Newark East Side led 29-20 at the half and took control with a 16-8 third-quarter spree. Akbar Hoffman led East Side with 13 points in Newark. Morristown finished at 18-8.
