Mount Olive, Morristown continue to rock top 10

Morriscountyvarsityboysbasketball Top 10

1) Mount Olive (8-1) Wins against High Point and Morris Hills keep the Marauders on top. They have not lost since opening day. The schedule turns tougher now with games against Pope John and Mendham upcoming. Mount Olive has seven consecutive victories.

2) Morristown (8-1) The Colonials had two wins last week including  a victory over cross-town rival Delbarton. Morristown will be tested against a physical Mendham team and will be a target for town rival Morristown-Beard, which always plays them tough.

3) Jefferson (9-0) The Falcons are off to one of their best starts in years. The athletic team posted double-digit wins over Sparta and Newton and may be just scratching the surface of its ability. Jefferson will see more Morris County competition soon with scheduled games against Pequannock and Mountain Lakes.

4) Hanover Park (7-2) The Hornets benefited from losses by Mendham and Chatham this week. Hanover Park has not lost since returning from their Florida trip over holiday break. They had sizable wins over Morristown-Beard and Madison this week. They will prepare for Boonton and Delbarton next.

5) Chatham (8-3) The Cougars up-and-down week kept it in the five-spot. Luke Conrad and Robert Raiola played huge roles in Chatham’s buzzer-beating victory over Mendham. It was a bounce-back win after a loss to West Morris. They should not overlook Roxbury and Parsippany Hills, which the Cougars have next on their agenda.

6) Mendham (8-3) It might seem unfair for the Minutemen to drop a few spots, but nothing has been easy for them these days. They led a good portion of the Chatham game but could not clinch a victory. Upcoming games against Morristown and Mount Olive will let them know where they stand in the rankings.

7) West Morris (7-4) The streaky Wolfpack have won their last three games. They jump up in the rankings after shocking Chatham and soundly beating Mountain Lakes. Delbarton and Morris Knolls, their next opponents, can be tough outs.

8) Morris Catholic (6-4) The Crusaders lost to out-of-county opponents last week (New Providence and Watchung Hills). The sizable win against Mountain Lakes gave them a boost in the rankings. Kinnelon, which is 6-4 and improving and Parsippany are their upcoming opponents.

9) Montville (6-4) A solid win over Morris Knolls and some fortuitous losses by other opponents has put the Mustangs back in the rankings. They also lost to Sparta last week. Home games against Vernon and Morris Hills could help the Mustangs’ status.

10) Mountain Lakes (6-3) The Lakers hang on by a thread. Back-to-back losses to West Morris and Morris Catholic nearly knocked them from the rankings. It will be a challenge to stay with Whippany Park and currently unbeaten Jefferson next on the schedule.

Pequannock (5-3) was knocked out of the rankings by a loss to struggling Boonton. It should also be remembered that one of they Golden Panthers’ wins is a forfeit from their Holiday Tournament. Montville’s win over Morris Knolls kept the Golden Eagles (5-5) out. Morristown-Beard 7-3 was also considered.

Please note that the top 10 does not include Monday’s games.
