Mount Olive upset; Jefferson advances in states

Mount Olive was stunned by 12th-seeded Northern Highlands 77-75 in North I, Group III state tournament action on Wednesday.

The Highlanders led 27-16 after the first quarter. The fourth-seeded Marauders rallied with a third-quarter run which led to a close finish.

Mount Olive, the two-time Morris County Tournament champion, finished with a 23-4 record. It was also the final game for seniors Rashaan Spencer, Ryan Traub and Zach Heeman. Spencer scored 19 points, Traub had 16 and Heeman finished with 14.

North 1, Group III

Jefferson 69, Pascack Valley 45

Senior guard Chris Telman scored 21 points and J R. Reese added 14 to help the Falcons advance to host rival Sparta in the next round. Tyler Jones chipped in with 12 for the Falcons (24-1). After a tight first quarter, Jefferson exploded with a 32-14 spree in the second quarter to build a 42-22 halftime advantage.

North 2, Group III

Newark East Side 55, Mendham 41

Top-seeded East Side took control with a 16-2 sec ond quarter performance and built a 31-19 halftime advantage. Jack Horan had 19 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Minutemen (17-9)

Orange 44, Chatham 34

The Tornadoes pulled away with a 16-7 fourth quarter. Robert Raiola finished his varsity career with a 14-point performance. Chatham ends the season at 14-11.
