Hanover Park ends another successful season

Newark West End defeated Hanover Park 89-75 in North 2, Group II semifinal round action on Saturday.

Donny Dattolo scored 16 points, John Crown scored 14 points and Matthew Pitts added 12 for the Hornets. Hanover Park finishes the season with a 21-7 record.

Newark West Side took control early. It led 20-15 at the end of the first quarter and built its lead to 49-32 at the halftime break behind strong performances by point guard Isiah Reyes and Quayan Williams-King.

The Hornets never gave up. Despite being down by 23 points, midway through the third quarter it chipped away at the West Side lead.

“My guys did what we did all year,” Hanover Park coach Todd Hartman said. “We battle and we respect everybody but we don’t fear anybody.”

The Hornets made several runs and cut their deficit. A Pitts 3-pointer with 1:30 left made it a 12-point game at 81-69 but Hanover Park never got the game to single digits.

The Hornets finish with another strong season including a regular season NJAC Division title and a Morris County Tournament semifinal appearance.

“For 12 years I’ve had a vision for what I want my teams to be,” Hartman said. “This team has come pretty close to my opinion as a basketball coach for what I think makes a successful team.”
