Hanover Park tops Mountain Lakes; Randolph falls

Alex Malofienko scored a career high 17 points and Michael Boeckel had 15 points including a pair of clutch free throws in the final seconds to lift Hanover Park to a 48-45 victory over Mountain Lakes in a North 2, Group II state tournament semifinal round contest in Mountain Lakes.

Fourth-seeded Hanover Park did not have a field goal and only had three free throws in the final four minutes but still managed to hold off a furious rush by the top-seeded Lakers at the end.

Malofienko was the surprise star. The sophomore helped the Hornets build a 26-18 halftime advantage . A 6-0 Lakers run helped them get to within 37-35 going into the final period but they never took the lead. Hanover Park is 22-6 and will play Newark West Side in Tuesday’s sectional final. The last time the Hornets won a section was iin 1974. West Side defeated Hackettstown 35-23.

Tate Gillie and Tom Gleeson scored 12 points apiece and Jake Schicke had 11 for Mountain Lakes. The Lakers finish the season at 18-9.

North 1, Group IV

Bloomfield 41, Randolph 39

The Rams finish the season at 20-7. The contest went to overtime with Bloomfield scoring the only two points in the extra session.

North 1, Group II

Westwood 41, Jefferson 39

Steven Breeman scored 20 points and Joe Batelli added 16 points for the ninth seeded Falcons. Jefferson led 20-15 at the half and 31-30 after three quarters. The Falcons finish 17-11 on the season. Westwood plays Newton in the final.
